Informal meeting of Ministers’ Deputies 25 March 2021: Conclusions by the Special Representative

Three conclusions:

  • Content which is illegal in public and on paper cannot be allowed to spread exponentially online. Our work on hate online will take national and European legislation into account and it may also draw on the pioneering legal challenge by the UEJF and its partners against Twitter for hosting illegal antisemitic and racist content in France. We are following the current court case closely.
  • Secondly, anti-Muslim hatred is a real and present risk to equitable societies and, as Ahmed Shaheed’s report highlights, online hate speech is part of that phenomenon. In the context of my mandate I therefore intend to inquire with national Muslim organisations about the nature and dimension of this specific type of hate speech. I will report back with conclusions in due course.
  • Finally, interreligious dialogue can make a valuable contribution to inclusive societies. I aim to promote the exchange of best practice and support initiatives which help to prevent hatred and hate crimes, including against Christians.
