Honouring the women laureates of the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe

On International Women’s Day, the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe pay tribute to the women who have received the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe in their name or on behalf organisations. Across decades and continents, they have advanced human rights, democracy, rule of law, as well as the development of intercultural dialogue and the reinforcement of the partnership and solidarity between North and South.

To name a few, the journey began in 1995 with Vera Duarte followed by Danielle Mitterrand, Mary Robinson and Emma Bonino, who strengthened the global human rights agenda. Champions of vulnerable communities, including Graça Machel and Marguerite Barankitse, placed children protection and education at the heart of their commitments.

Pioneers for women’s rights such as Nawal El Saadawi, Mukhtar Mai, Simone Veil, Asma Jahangir, Jaha Dukureh, and Zarifa Ghafari transformed personal courage into global movements for equality. Defenders of justice and democracy, from Frene Ginwala and Louise Arbour to Amina Bouayach, have strengthened institutions and upheld the rule of law.

Others embodied solidarity in action: Giuseppina Nicolini and Lora Pappa in defence of migrants and refugees, but also Queen Rania of Jordan in empowering youth. This tribute also honours all the women contributing to global initiatives such as the International Commission against the Death Penalty and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, powerful examples of cooperation and shared commitment that transcend borders.

Coming from diverse cultures, regions and professional paths, they all reflect a rich diversity of experiences and perspectives. Yet, beyond this diversity, they are united by common values, desire of peace and mutual support. Through persistence and expertise, they demonstrate that change is driven by the determination of individuals and collectives who choose to act. Today, the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe recalls words shared by Zakia Khudadadi, who received the Prize on behalf of the initiative supporting refugee participation in the Olympic and Paralympic Games last October:

“Education provides the tools to move towards a more just future. With opportunities, anything becomes possible. I want to say to all women, in Afghanistan and elsewhere, that hope is alive. You are not alone. (…) My message is a call for courage: keep dreaming, keep fighting for your rights, and keep believing in a better future.”

Women’s rights are human rights. Today and every day, the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe remains committed to defending and advancing the rights of all women, everywhere.
