Joint activities of “National Children’s Council” and Council of Europe Office in Ukraine

To mark the European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse (18th November) and with support of the Council of Europe project “Combating violence against women and children in Ukraine”, the National Children’s Council conducted a Round Table on 13th November “How Can I Contribute to Security and Well-Being of Children in Ukraine” with the participation of the International Centre for Development and Leadership and graduates of boarding schools.

The main aim of the Round Table was to identify, based on debates with the youth, the needs and opportunities for support for children living in boarding schools and other forms of alternative care, identify the forms and types of such support to help children feel safe, protect themselves from violence and sexual exploitation, and have more control over their own lives. The participants also discussed online violence, watched a video about child grooming, and talked about the potential ways to protect children against such threats. Young participants of the Round Table, who were former pupils of boarding schools, shared their experiences of going through important stages of social adaptation while being subjected to institutional care, searching for the sources of support, and using their own resources. They also learned about the international standards on protection of children’s rights, relevant national legislation, services and agencies or other actors responsible for the protection of their rights.

A second Round Table “Meeting the Mentors: How Can I Contribute to Security and Well-Being of Children in Ukraine” with the participation of mentors of children and young people staying in boarding schools was organised on 17th November as a follow-up and linked to the finding of the first Round Table. The aim was to identify, based on debates with experienced mentors, the needs and opportunities for supporting children who are living in institutions providing alternative care, to develop recommendations how to improve the mentor training programme in terms of children’s protection against violence and mentoring tools for the prevention of sexual abuse of children.
