Joint activities of “La Strada –Ukraine” and Council of Europe Office in Ukraine

La Strada – Ukraine marked the European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, which is celebrated on 18th November, by launching a campaign to raise awareness on the incidence and consequences of child sexual exploitation and abuse in Ukraine as well as the commitments of the Government of Ukraine under the Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, also known as the “Lanzarote Convention”. Ukraine ratified the Lanzarote Convention in 2012.

With support of the Council of Europe project “Combating violence against women and children in Ukraine (2017), La Strada’s campaign reaches parliamentarians, journalists and the general public through the following events:

  • High-level press event at the Media Crises Center (2 Khreschatyk Street, Ukrainian House) on the 17th November with the participation of the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Children's Rights, representative of the juvenile police department of the National Police of Ukraine, Council of Europe and civil society actors.
  • Distribution of 18 different types of postcards among Deputies of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (Parliament) on the protection of children against sexual exploitation and sexual abuse prepared specifically for the European Day.
  • An internet flashmob in social media (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lastradaukraine/)
  • A flashmob in the print media covering interviews with national key experts on children’s rights issues during the 2nd -3rd weeks of November 2017.

Sexual violence against children remains a taboo in the Ukrainian society. Because of lack of awareness, reporting structures, support services for victims and witnesses and stigma attached to sexual violence, children prefer often not to talk about it. However, the society must be aware of what is happening and have zero tolerance for all forms of violence against children, including sexual exploitation and abuse, in order to be able to help victims, punish offenders, and prevent it.
