Productive first meeting of the Council of Europe Drafting Committee on Migrant Women, 1-2 October 2020
The Council of Europe’s Drafting Committee on Migrant Women (GEC-MIG) held a productive 1st meeting via videoconference on 1 and 2 October 2020. GEC-MIG is tasked by the Committee of Ministers to draft a Recommendation on migrant and refugee women. GEC-MIG examined a needs assessment document and heard speakers on topics such as the relevant case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, the challenges migrant and refugee women are confronted with highlighted by the activities of Office of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights as well as the relevant provisions of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence . GEC-MIG also listened with great interest to the presentations of three migrant women’s organisations: the European Network of Migrant Women, DaMigra (umbrella organisation of migrant women in Germany) and Plurielles (Strasbourg, France). Vera Eloi da Fonseca  representative of Portugal to GEC-MIG and Coordinator of the Project Team on Intersecting Inequalities at the High Commission for Migration was elected chair of the Drafting Committee. In its concluding session, the Drafting Committee agreed to prepare a draft recommendation following a broad approach addressing all relevant policies and looking at migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women girls.
