European and Latin American exchange on Digital Citizenship Education

Organised by UNESCO and Council of Europe, a first event aimed at fostering collaboration and exchange between Europe and Latin America on Digital Citizenship Education (DCE) took place in Lisbon, on February 7 and 8. Representatives from seven states discussed the integration of DCE in education systems, the experiences, achievements, and challenges faced in the past few years, and collaborated to conceptualise possible initiatives for its further promotion.

Representatives from Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Portugal, Spain, and Türkiye emphasized the importance of initial teacher training and curricular integration to equip educators and learners with the necessary skills to navigate the digital landscape responsibly; and exchanged views on concepts related to DCE, such as Media and Information Literacy and Digital Competence, among others.

The 2025 European Year of Digital Citizenship Education, announced at the 26th session of the Council of Europe Standing Conference of Ministers of Education, has among its objectives the strengthening of international collaboration and engagement on DCE. The participants from the two regions expressed interest in collaborating in view and throughout the Year, through joint webinars and workshops, resource sharing, visibility campaigns and joint research activities.
