As a result of Training for Trainers organized early in October, a prison psychologist, now a trainer from the pool of trainers, delivered under the guidance of a Council of Europe consultant a training to the peer prison staff on 22-23 November in Chania, Crete. The cascade training was based on the “Guide on preventing Self-harm in prisons” and the “Training curricula on mental health care”, developed under the Project and disseminated to all Greek prisons.
Thirty (30) members of prison staff including prison directors, security staff, doctors, nurses and social workers from prisons throughout Crete enhanced their knowledge on screening on mental health issues, self-harm and suicide prevention. Emphasis was also placed on combining theory and practice as well as on a multi-disciplinary approach in order to strenghten the skills of the staff to manage cases of prisoners in need of mental health care.
A second cascade training for additional members of prison staff will be delivered in December 2021 by prison psychologists from the same team of trainers built during the Training for Trainers in October 2021.
The training was organized within the project “Strengthening prison health care in Greece“, funded by the Council of Europe Human Rights Trust Fund and implemented by the Criminal Law Cooperation Unit, Council of Europe.
