The use of alternative sanctions and the improvement of health care services in prisons in Greece, have been further promoted through three Council of Europe publications which have been translated and made available in Greek

The functioning of probation service in Greece remains a challenge despite the crucial role it can play to reduce overcrowding, a key objective of the project Council of Europe implements in Greece. To support the development of probation services, the publication on Implementing Community Sanctions and Measures intends to provide guidance to management and staff of agencies implementing community sanctions and measures, and specifically those responsible for the provision of what are generally known or described as probation services.

Two additional publications: Guidelines - Organisation and Management of Health Care in Prison and Prison health care and medical ethics are addressed to prison health‑care workers and other prison staff with responsibility for prisoners’ well‑being. They highlight important ethical standards and suggests responses to ethical dilemmas and provide key advice on the organization of prison health care in prison environment.

The two publications have been printed in 3.000 copies and will be shared with the Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Ministry of Justice of Greece for dissemination to health care and other prison staff, while the publication for the alternative sanctions will be printed in 1.500 copies and shared with the Ministry of Justice.

These translations and publications were done within the project „Strengthening prison health care in Greece “, funded by the Council of Europe Human Rights Trust Fund and implemented by the Criminal Law Cooperation Unit (DG I).
