The 1st meeting of the Working group for the Development of the Mental Health Care Strategy for the Penitentiary System of the Republic of Moldova with Action Plan, including the Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention Policy (herewith the Strategy) was conducted online on 04-05 May 2020.
The key elements and the strategic goals of the Strategy and its Action Plan were agreed: inter alia mental health promotion in prisons; screening and assessment; treatment, services and support; self-harm and suicide prevention and management; support on discharge; and staff training. The Strategy is a novelty for Moldova and the National Administration of Penitentiaries expressed its full support to the document.
The Working Group meeting was attended by representatives of specialised Departments of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (penitentiary inspection, social reintegration directorate, external relations, healthcare) and specialists (medical and mental health care professionals) from the penitentiaries no 4 Cricova, no 13 Chisinau, no 15 Cricova and no 16 Pruncul, and was facilitated by the Council of Europe consultants.
The activity was organised under the auspices of the Programme “Promoting a human rights compliant criminal justice system in the Republic of Moldova”, funded by the Government of Norway and implemented by the Council of Europe.
