At their 1555th meeting, on 25 March, the Ministers’ Deputies conducted their six-monthly review of the situation regarding abolition of the death penalty. They took a series of decisions on this matter, including an expression of deep concern over the legislative proposals, currently being examined in the Knesset, which would expand the death penalty in Israel and calling on the authorities of Israel to abandon them. Ms Isabelle Rome, Ambassador at large for Human Rights at the French Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs, and Mr Raphaël Chenuil-Hazan, Executive Director of the civil society organisation Together Against the Death Penalty (Ensemble Contre la Peine de Mort), participated in a thematic discussion presenting the next World Congress against the Death Penalty, which will take place from 30 June to 2 July 2026 in Paris.

The Deputies interviewed the candidates for the post of Deputy Secretary General. In accordance with the adopted timetable, they will submit a shortlist to the Parliamentary Assembly on 29 April 2026, which will then elect the next Deputy Secretary General on 23 June 2026.

The Deputies held their regular exchange with Secretary General Alain Berset, focusing on his official visit to Serbia (5-6 March 2026).

They also heard a communication from the Secretary General of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Mathieu Mori, on the preparation of the 50th Congress session (31 March - 2 April 2026).

The other items examined by the Deputies appear in the Agenda and the decisions adopted are available in the meeting file.
