The Minister of Justice of the Slovak Republic, Ms Lucia Žitnanská, and the President of CEPEJ, Mr Georg Stawa, presented the report “Efficiency and quality of the Slovak judicial system / Assessment and recommendations on the basis of CEPEJ tools” which puts forward an expert view on the current state of affairs in the Slovak judicial system and the possible ways of improving the efficiency and the quality of courts. On 27-28 February 2018, in Bratislava, a team composed of CEPEJ experts and representatives of the Ministry of Justice involved in the assessment exercise presented its main findings and recommendations to members of the judiciary, including the Judicial Council, presidents of courts, judges, representatives of legal professions, political decision makers, non-governmental organisations active in the field of justice and the press. The participants had the opportunity to ask questions and express their view on the topics of judicial independence, access to justice, efficiency and quality of judicial services. The Slovak Ministry of Justice presented the follow up it intends to give to the recommendations of the report, including the short and medium-term priorities such as further specialisation of judges, improving the system of reporting on courts’ performance and distribution of resources, setting up timeframes for judicial proceedings and fighting the backlogs. CEPEJ will continue supporting these measures as part of the on-going co-operation project “Efficiency and quality of the Slovak justice system”, financed by the European Social Fund.
