Dear Global Educators, The first quarter of 2011 was highlighted with the following activities in the field of Education and Youth: The Global Education online Training Course (Spring course), 28 February -25 March. In 2011 the NSC pursues its successful on-line training-course scheme initiated in 2009. The Spring course ended last 25 March after its 51 participants went through four modules. This course was attended by educators from Armenia, Australia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Filipinas, France, Germany, Ghana, Great-Britain, Greece, Hungary, India, Italia, Kenya, Latvia, F.Y.R. of Macedonia, Madagascar, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Togo, Tunisia, Zimbabwe. The 2011 Summer course will take place in June and application process is possible through NSC webpage. The North-South Centre participated in a workshop on Education to Intercultural Dialogue organised by the University of Padua from 22 to 23 March. This workshop allowed stakeholders representing academia, and local authorities from Veneto region to share educational practices in the field of Intercultural learning with international guests representing the Anna Lindh Foundation, Council of Europe, Europe of Cultures Forum and UNESCO. In the framework of the EC/NSC Joint Management Agreement programme supporting GE in new EU member States, the NSC participated in the Visegrad regional seminar on Global Education/Development Education in Prague, from 24 to 25 March. Educational institutions and other key actors involved in GDE in the four Visegrad countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) met to discuss among other things the concepts, quality standards and national strategies for GDE. More recently, 7-9 April, the NSC participated in the Bakou World Forum on Intercultural dialogue and organised a workshop under the theme Dialogue between and among the world’s religions. The forum addressed the conceptual, governance, policy and practical aspects of the challenge of intercultural dialogue. On the Youth programme the Central Africa sub-regional seminar on youth policies and the African Youth Charter, 11-13 March, in Libreville (Gabon) aimed at providing a strategic guideline on how to use the skills, energy and innovation of young people and ensure an environment conducive to successful development objectives, constructive leadership, participation and autonomy of the youth. More recently the NSC organised the “Youth Leaders Meeting on Youth Policies in the Context of the Africa-Europe Youth Cooperation” in Addis Ababa on 10-13 April 2011, for youth leaders to build a common action plan on the development of the Africa-Europe youth dialogue and cooperation framework and on the implementation of the recommendations resulting from the Africa-Europe Youth Summits. The 45th (and in principle last) meeting of the NSC Executive Council was held last 28 March, in Lisbon (Portugal). According to the proposed new statutory Resolution, the two present statutory bodies of the North-South Centre (i.e. the Executive Council and the Committee of Member States) will be merged into a new “Executive Committee” which will be the unique decision making body of the Centre. It is foreseen that this new body will hold its constitutive meeting in June in Strasbourg. The 2010 North-South Prize Award Ceremony, which took place last 29 March, in Lisbon (Portugal), awarded Louise Arbour (Canada) and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Brazil).
