29.11.2013 - Many cases of sexual abuse of children could be avoided if adequate prevention measures were taken. The Lanzarote Convention requests States to invest in prevention, including through general awareness raising campaigns, education and training programmes for parents and professionals working with children, through sexuality education, safe recruitment systems and through intervention programmes for perpetrators and potential perpetrators, etc. Organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the Spanish Government and with the support of Fundación “La Caixa”, the Conference will serve to present an overview of the various problems and discuss the solutions applied in Europe. It will also permit recognition and promotion of the role of the various policies (on education, social services, communication, justice and health), the national, regional and local authorities, civil society, the private sector, families and children in developing and implementing actions and policies of prevention. The Conference will bring together some 180 participants from about fifty countries. Besides the members of the Lanzarote Committee (representing their respective governments), we await numerous experts in the fields of justice, education, child welfare, social and family policies, health, research and communication. These experts represent governments, international organisations, independent institutions, the private sector and civil society.
