[20/03/07 16:00] Commissioner Thomas Hammarberg visited Warsaw for talks with Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga. The agenda includes Poland's controversial lustration law, the government's efforts to combat discrimination and racism, as well as the Commissioner's future role in relation to cases at the European Court of Human Rights. The Commissioner also spoke at a conference organised by Save the Children, Sweden, in defence of the rights of children in migration, including their right to education.

Thomas Hammarberg also paid a visit to 97-year old Irena Sendler, a renowned activist of the Polish resistance during World War II. Mrs. Sendler helped to save the lives of 2500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. In 1943, she was arrested by the Gestapo, severely tortured and sentenced to death. She was saved by the resistance movement through a bribe, on the way to her to execution. Officially, she was listed as executed and went into hiding.  Related document
