Congress Champions Local Action for Sustainable Urban Mobility at UNECE Regional Forum

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, represented by Alan McDowell (United Kingdom, ILDG), participated in the Round Table on Sustainable Urban Mobility during the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regional Forum on Sustainable Development, in Geneva on 21 April 2026. The event provided a platform for exchange between local, regional, and international stakeholders committed to the advancement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) – making cities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Mr McDowell emphasised that effective progress on SDGs, including sustainable mobility, relies on the competences, resources and financial autonomy of cities and regions which are responsible for achieving some 65% of SDG targets. “By empowering local governments, we can create resilient and people-oriented cities fit for the future,” he said, calling for collaborative reforms at all levels to ensure local and regional authorities can contribute fully to the attainment of the SDGs.

Several local initiatives presented at the Forum showcased the potential of local action to drive economic efficiency, environmental sustainability and social fairness. These included Munich’s (Germany) AI-driven e-mobility hubs integrating public transport, bike-sharing and EV charging stations; Westminster’s (United Kingdom) electric refuse fleet powered by energy from waste, as well as Northumberland’s (United Kingdom) solar-powered County Hall, covering 50% of its energy needs and saving £150,000 annually.

The Congress continues to align with UNECE guidelines and UN SDGs, fostering dialogue, innovation and practical solutions for sustainable urban and regional development.
