The Kempense Heuvelrug (Campine Ridge) area-based initiative is founded on an innovative methodology of landscape biography and vision. This methodology was introduced in Flanders in 2015 and, by 2021, was developed to cover the entire ridge (5,000 hectares). Over the past ten years the project enhanced landscape and heritage care and sustainable tourism. The project and partnership realised a high-quality and accessible visitor reception, immersive experiences, guide programs, hospitality ambassador schemes, landscape design, landscape restoration, and heritage care.

Landscape, heritage, tourism, and local communities are now connected within an integrated partnership that has a lasting impact on area development. Through public participation, broad partnerships, and a (geo)tourism offer grounded in geological, scenic, and archaeological qualities and a deeper understanding of the place’s (temporal) layering, the project contributes to landscape care and vibrant awareness. In doing so, it addresses various aspects of the European Landscape Convention at local and regional levels.
