Meeting of criminal law departments of Appellate Courts on case law harmonisation in Novi Sad

The meeting of the criminal law departments of all four appellate courts and the Supreme Court took place on 31 October 2025 in Novi Sad, with the support of the joint EU/CoE project “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia.” These quarterly meetings are part of the case law harmonisation mechanism established based on the agreement between the Supreme Court and the appellate courts, aimed at fostering discussion and preventing conflicting judicial decisions.

Different perspectives from the case law departments of the four appellate courts were presented and discussed by participating judges to reach a common standpoint. Judges from the Supreme Court also highlighted the viewpoint of the Supreme Court’s criminal law department on these contested matters. The meeting resulted in a unified position on several identified issues, which will be circulated among the relevant courts.

The Supreme Court’s case law department will work on updating the agreement between the Supreme Court and the appellate courts to ensure the sustainability of the case law harmonisation efforts. The joint EU/CoE project “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia” continues its case law harmonisation activities and awareness-raising among judges on the importance of unified case law.
