The project Strengthening the capacities of the Albanian judiciary to better apply standards on the right to liberty and security joined a two-day training on “Reporting Justice Accurately: Professional Standards in Legal and Court Reporting”. The event, organised for court reporters and journalists, was part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe action on Protecting Freedom of Expressions and of the Media in Albania (PROFREX), in co-operation with the Association of Albanian Journalists.
The training featured a dedicated session on pre-trial detention, examining its application, fundamental concepts and key terminology. The aim was to help journalists better understand the function and use of pre-trail detention and provide them with the tools to report on this topic accurately and responsibly.
By enhancing journalists’ understanding of judicial procedures this initiative seeks to improve public information related to pre-trial detention within the justice system. It also aims to strengthen public trust and raise awareness about the importance of pre-trial detention in protecting fundamental human rights.
The session was welcomed by journalists, who shared their experiences and practices, underlining the importance of having in-depth knowledge on procedural rights related to pre-trial detention.
The project will continue to foster close co-operation with the media to make the concepts surrounding pre-trial detention more accessible to journalists and consequently, to the general public.
The project Strengthening the capacities of the Albanian judiciary to better apply standards on the right to liberty and security is funded by the Human Rights Trust Fund (HRTF), which brings together eight Council of Europe member states: Finland, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom.
