In the framework of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of Europe, the Irish Ministry for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, the Irish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Council of Europe SOGI Unit, with the support of the United Kingdom Government Equalities Office, are co-organising a European Roundtable on ‘Right to life, security and protection from violence: combating SOGIESC-based hate crime across Europe’, on 27 October 2022 (10:15-17:00 UTC).
The event will bring together representatives of member states, international institutions and NGOs, academia and other key stakeholders to share best practice, discuss challenges and inspire potential solutions on hate crime motivated by sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). The key themes for discussion will be international standards, legal protections and non-legislative areas such as institutional cooperation, awareness raising and victims’ rights.
Speakers will include: Ireland’s Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman; Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, Michael O’ Flaherty; Chair of the Council of Europe Steering Committee on Anti-Discrimination, Diversity and Inclusion (CDADI), Triantafillos Loukarelis.
This activity is part of the annual thematic review of Council of Europe Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)5 on measures to combat discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. Findings and outcomes from the discussions at the Roundtable will be reflected in the report, which will be presented to the Steering Committee on Anti-Discrimination, Diversity and Inclusion (CDADI) for adoption in 2023. The objective is to provide support to ongoing efforts to advance dialogue at national level on issues deemed important for the advancement of the human rights of LGBTI persons.
The Event will be live streamed online from Dublin on 27 October 2022, 10:15-17:00 UTC. (Join with #SOGI2022 - How to use Slido)
