European Roundtable on Advancing Healthcare Access for LGBTI People in Europe, 15 November

This year's review examines the gaps between Recommendation CM/Rec(2010)5 and national legislation, policy, and implementation, as well as their practical impact on access to healthcare for LGBTI individuals. The aim is to collect promising practices and learn from successful initiatives that have improved healthcare access for LGBTI communities across Europe. The cumulative findings will contribute to a European-wide report scheduled to be published by the Council of Europe in the summer of 2024.

The Roundtable aims to delve into the multifaceted challenges and intricacies faced by LGBTI individuals in their quest for equitable healthcare. It will focus on the following key areas:

  1. Human Rights Standards & National Legislative and Policy Frameworks: Exploring international and European legal standards and how they resonate in national legislation and policies.
  2. Strategies & Programmes for LGBTI Healthcare Access: Discussing how member states are addressing and mainstreaming the healthcare needs of LGBTI persons through National Action Plans and specialised programmes.
  3. Education & Training Curricula for Healthcare Practitioners: Tackling strategies for effectively educating and training healthcare professionals.
  4. Structural and Organisational Factors: Covering measures that can optimise healthcare systems to serve the diverse needs of LGBTI individuals.
  5. Research and Data Collection: Addressing existing research, knowledge gaps, and the importance of evidence-based policy and practice for LGBTI healthcare access.

Each session will include an overview, insights from academics, LGBTI communities, views from government representatives, and an open discussion. The event is open to policymakers, healthcare policy representatives, legal experts, academics, and anyone with a vested interest in the healthcare journey of LGBTI individuals.

Beyond this European Roundtable, the thematic review is also covering four key topics through separate expert discussions: trans-specific healthcare, healthcare for older LGBTI people, mental health, and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The proceedings of these discussions will be published, and will also contribute to the European-wide report on healthcare.
