Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights

The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, has just published her annual activity report 2019, which provides an overall picture of the main problems, challenges and opportunities that European countries are facing in the field of human rights. The report contains a chapter on the human rights of Roma and Travellers, stating that hate speech and crimes against Roma remain widespread and that hostile demonstrations and collective attacks against Roma, often followed by illegal evictions, have on several occasions forced them to move away for their own security. Anti-Roma hate speech by certain politicians legitimised the rejection and marginalisation of Roma and contributed to establishing a climate of simmering violence against Roma in several parts of Europe, said Commissioner Mijatović. The full report is available here.
