The first webinar on the topic “Human rights protection under the European Convention on Human Rights“, took place on 27 November 2020.

The webinar was organised in co-operation with the Centre for Human Rights of the Law Faculty in Belgrade and brought together around 35 students from the law faculties in Serbia, with an aim to inform, educate and encourage law students to look into main aspects of the human rights protection under the European Convention on Human Rights.

During an intensive two-hour discussion, students were introduced to the living instrument doctrine, its meaning and justifiability in the context of the European Convention on Human Rights, as well as with the way of processing of a case before the European Court of Human Rights (the Court).

Mirjana Lazarova-Trajkovska, judge of the Supreme Court, North Macedonia and former judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of North Macedonia (2008-2017) underlined that the Court has a role of conscience of Europe. It will have to address consequences of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 crisis and to provide guidelines to the States in order to prevent future violations.

The event was the first of series of webinars, which will be organised by December 18 under the framework of the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. Webinars will also feature topics of national mechanism for human rights protection, execution of the ECtHR judgments and other more specific issues such as Council of Europe role in respect to preventing and combating violence against women.

This series is organised under the Action “Strengthening the effective legal remedies to human rights violations in Serbia”, implemented under joint programme of the European Union and Council of Europe “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
