Council of Europe’s expert group on violence against women visits Estonia

A delegation of the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) will carry out an evaluation visit to Estonia from 14 to 18 February 2022. This visit is one of the steps in the procedure to monitor the implementation by Estonia of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (Istanbul Convention).

The Istanbul Convention is based on the understanding that states must fully address gender-based violence in all its forms and take measures to prevent such violence, protect the victims and prosecute the perpetrators.

Meetings will be held with representatives from different Ministries and public bodies: Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior and Police and Border Guard Board, Ministry Education and Research and Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Insurance Board and National Institute for Health Development of Estonia, as well as members of the Estonian judiciary, prosecution and law enforcement services. In addition, the GREVIO delegation will meet with representatives of non-governmental organisations and civil society working in the area of violence against women.

GREVIO plans to publish its evaluation report during 2022.
