European ministers adopt “Dublin Declaration” on preventing violence through equality

European Ministers of Justice, gathered in Dublin, on 29 and 30 September, at the invitation of the Minister of Justice of Ireland, in the context of the Irish Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

After two days of exchanges and discussions on prevention measures aimed at a long-term, strategic change in societal attitudes and consequently behaviors to end violence against women in all its forms the Ministers of Justice of thirty-eight European states committed to a declaration, the “Dublin Declaration”, outlining a series of steps to promote gender equality in order to help prevent domestic, sexual and gender-based violence.

Violence against women is a human rights abuse that is widespread across all Council of Europe member states and a major obstacle to the achievement of gender equality in Europe, therefore ratifying the Istanbul Convention remains a major step to establish legal standards to ensure women’s rights to be free from violence.
