Strategies to criminalise and prosecute sexual violence under the Istanbul Convention

Sexual violence, including rape, represents one of the most under-reported forms of violence against women. It is characterised by high attrition rates at the investigation and prosecution stages and few convictions, which lead to a culture of impunity.

To show the evolution of legislation, policies and support services to prevent and combat sexual violence, and to demonstrate how the Istanbul Convention is contributing to these positive changes, the 4th General Report on activities of the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO)  includes a specific section on the topic: “Approaches taken in states parties to the Istanbul Convention on the criminalisation and prosecution of sexual violence, including rapeThe report also highlights GREVIO’s accomplishments in 2022, including ratification of the Istanbul Convention by Ukraine.

The focus section is now available in Ukrainian, translated under the Council of Europe project “Combating violence against women in Ukraine – Phase II” (COVAW-II).
