Support to the Gambia in setting up supervisory authorities

On 8 February, the Council of Europe help an online workshop presenting to the sub-committee in charge of the future legislation on data protection in the Gambia the two main models for supervisory authorities of the right to data protection and the right to access to information.

The Gambia is currently working on finalising a project of law on data protection, to be soon tabled to the Parliament. One issue pending is the framework of the future supervisory authority.

Next to expert support providing a desk study on the issue, representatives of supervisory authorities from France, Germany and Tunisia exposed the set up adopted in their respective countries, and shared their practical experience of conciliating both rights at stake. They answered concrete questions, with the objectives to bring elements to help the Gambia to make the most informed decision.

The relevant provisions of Convention 108+ were also brought to the attention of participants.

The workshop was organised with the technical and financial support of the Glacy+ programme.
