Back Croatia: 3 cities become members of the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes

In September 2023, the Tourist Board of the City of Pula, the Tourist Board of the City of Šibenik City of Dubrovnik joined the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes. These adhesions mark the entry of Croatia as a new member of the oldest Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.

The Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Route, certified in 1987 now crosses 9 European countries. Since the discovery of the tomb of Saint James in the Middle Ages, the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Route became one of the most important European pilgrimages, its completion guaranteeing earning a plenary indulgence. Over the centuries, this created a  rich heritage, and every year, hundreds of thousands of travellers from all over Europe set out to make their way to Santiago de Compostela. Most pilgrims travel on foot or by bicycle and sometimes on  horseback.

To celebrate this, the 1st edition of the Adria Camino Festival was held 2-5 May, in Pula. This festival, themed 'Camino de Santiago – A Shared European Path' included the inauguration of a new section of the Croatian Camino route, and the premiere of the new Camino film by Bill Bennet, as well as conferences on the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe that pass through Croatia, and the different ways of the Santiago de Compostela Pilgrim Routes throughout Europe. This festival attracted more than 600 participants from 17 countries.

Croatia is a member of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on the Cultural Routes of te Council of Europe (EPA) since 2016. Today, Croatia counts 20 Cultural Routes crossing the country. Mrs Tatjana Horvatić, Head of Movable, Ethnographic and Intangible Cultural Heritage Office of the Ministry of Culture and Media is the EPA Governing Board Representative for Croatia.
