A workshop on the opportunities and challenges of financial technologies (FinTech) in the implementation of anti-money laundering and terrorist financing (AML/CFT) measures took place remotely on 16 and 17 September 2020. The activity brought together representatives of the financial sector in Tunisia including banks, insurance companies, stock market intermediaries, microfinance companies, portfolio management and leasing companies as well as representatives of the Tunisian Committee of Financial Analysis (CTAF).

Financial technologies, commonly referred to as FinTech, are used in the industry of financial services and combine the latest technological developments and innovations with financial services or applications from businesses to consumers.

The workshop was an opportunity (i) to present and discuss the evolving opportunities, emerging risks and challenges of FinTech in the context of AML/CFT; (ii) to provide an overview of the regulatory and supervisory challenges posed by FinTech in the area of AML/CFT; (iii) to discuss developments and efforts in this area in the Tunisian context; and (iv) to have an illustration of notable cases showing how different jurisdictions approach the regulation and supervision of FinTech.

This activity was organised by the Tunisia Anti-corruption Project (ACT) in cooperation with the CTAF, within the framework of the joint programme “Project to support independent bodies in Tunisia” (PAII-T), financed by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the latter.
