European Lawyers Day – 25 October 2025

On the occasion of the European Lawyers' Day, an initiative of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), the European Committee on Legal Co-operation (CDCJ) welcomes the growing number of signatures of the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer, which was opened for signature on 13 May 2025 in Luxembourg.

Since then, four new countries have signed the Luxembourg Convention: Bulgaria on 3 July; Croatia on 14 October; Romania on 21 October; and Latvia on 23 October. In addition to these four new signatories, the following states had already signed it: Andorra; Belgium; Estonia; France; Greece; Iceland; Ireland; Italy; Lithuania; Luxembourg; the Netherlands; North Macedonia; Norway; Poland; Republic of Moldova; Sweden; and the United Kingdom. There is now a total of 21 signatures.

The Luxembourg Convention will enter into force after eight ratifications, following which states worldwide will be able to join the convention, the first-ever international treaty aiming to protect the profession of lawyer in a context of increasing reports of attacks on the practice of the profession.
