Back Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan visited the Council of Europe

On 23 and 24 March 2017 Mr Askar Shakirov, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan, visited the Council of Europe. The visit was organised in the framework of the EU-Council of Europe Joint Programme “Support to the Kazakh Authorities in Improving the Quality and Efficiency of the Kazakh Justice System”. In the framework of the visit consultations between the Council of Europe representatives and the Commissioner for Human Rights have been organized on the reform of the Ombudsman institution with the aim to bring it in line with European standards.

During the two-day visit Mr Shakirov met the representatives of the Justice and Legal Co-operation Department, Directorate of External Relations, Office of the Directorate General of Programmes, Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights, European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), Steering Committee for Human Rights and the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights.

Mr Shakirov informed the Council of Europe representatives about the Constitutional reform which has been recently carried in Kazakhstan and its positive impact on the strengthening of the Ombudsman institution.

The participants of the consultations also discussed the co-operation with the Commissioner’s Office under the Joint Programme and priority areas on strengthening the human rights protection in criminal justice. Parties positively assessed the progress achieved under the Joint Programme and expressed commitment for further co-operation.
