Tunis 2nd round table on the development and implementation of drug policy and seminar on opiate substitution treatment
[10/10/2013] On 9 and 10 October, the MedNET network of co-operation in the Mediterranean Region on Drugs and Drug Addiction holded in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Tunis, a second round table on the development and implementation of drug policy. The round table will discuss the national drug strategy, the implementation of the new drug law on the criminal judicial system and the first contact with drug users. (Read more)

On 1st October 2013, Israel became the 36th Member State
[01/10/2013] The first activity to take place in Israel will be the 10th EXASS Net Meeting on ‘Drug prevention, treatment and rehabilitation for young people’ from 15 to 17 October. It will also be the occasion for a short ceremony during the Permanent Correspondents meeting in November.

International Conference Transcultural Drug Work, Moscow, 3 October

In dealing with ethnic groups of drug users it is indispensable to deal with cultural specificities, norms and values of the clients in planning and implementing treatment and social rehabilitation. It is essential to develop dialogue with migrants, taking into account their cultural identity. A key to successful integration of this vulnerable group into the system of social welfare and health care lies in the trans-cultural competences of professionals and institutions that deal with regular and irregular drug using migrants.

Council of Europe anti-torture Committee publishes report on Turkey

The Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) has published today the report on its June 2012 ad hoc visit to Turkey, together with the Turkish authorities’ response. The main objective of the visit was to examine the treatment and conditions of detention of juveniles held in prisons. The visit was triggered by allegations received earlier in 2012 of ill-treatment of juvenile prisoners by prison staff and inter-prisoner violence at Pozantı Prison. (Read more)

Venice Commission Plenary Session

[11/10/2013] The Council of Europe’s advisory body of legal and constitutional experts, the Venice Commission, is holding a plenary session in Venice on 11 and 12 0ctober.Documents likely to be adopted at the meeting include opinions on Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Counterfeit medical products: Council of Europe steps up action worldwide with MEDICRIME Convention

[11/10/2013] Seventy participants from 32 countries from all continents, member states and observer states of the Council of Europe and observer states of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission will meet on 16 and 17 October in Strasbourg to discuss cooperation in the legal and public health fields so that the MEDICRIME Convention can rapidly be ratified by as many countries as possible worldwide. 3rd annual report of the Group of experts on trafficking in human beings (GRETA) : "Europe must not stay an El Dorado for human traffickers"

[16/10/2013] “Human trafficking and the worst forms of exploitation that go with it call for governments and parliaments to up their game”, states Nicolas Le Coz, President of GRETA. “Europe must not stay an El Dorado for human traffickers”. In light of its on-the-spot findings in the 10 European countries evaluated between 1 August 2012 and 31 July 2013, the Council of Europe anti-trafficking watchdog stresses the need to combat all forms of trafficking in human beings. Council of Europe sets up Cybercrime Programme Office in Bucharest

[16/10/2013] The Council of Europe will set up a Programme Office on Cybercrime in Bucharest (Romania) to manage its global capacity building activities in this area. A Memorandum of Understanding to this effect was signed today in Bucharest by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Titus Corlăţean and Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni. Multilateral meeting on the social reintegration of juvenile offenders subject to sanctions or measures

[26/10/2013] The aim of this meeting which takes place on 29-30 October 2013 in Strasbourg is to bring together representatives of prison and probation services of countries with different experiences to share good practices and to identify ways of introducing new approaches in their systems in line with the standards of the Council of Europe and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT).
