Russian Federation:  The Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities visits the Russian Federation

A delegation of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities will be conducting a monitoring visit to the Russian Federation from 12 to 16 September 2011 in order to gain updated information on the situation of persons belonging to national minorities in the country.

The Committee is composed of 18 independent experts elected by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

The two-team delegation will visit Perm and Tyumen on 12-13 September and Moscow on 14-16 September. They will meet with the federal and regional representatives of relevant ministries and other public bodies in charge of minority issues, ombudsmanís offices, national minorities, as well as non-governmental organisations and independent experts.

On the basis of the information collected during the visit and the state report submitted by the authorities in 2010, the Advisory Committee will adopt its third Opinion on the implementation of the Framework Convention in the Russian Federation.

The delegation visiting the Russian Federation includes the following members of the Advisory Committee: Mr Rainer HOFMANN (President of the Advisory Committee and member elected in respect of Germany), Mr Einar NIEMI (elected in respect of Norway) and Ms Athanasia SPILIOPOULOU ŇKERMARK (elected in respect of Sweden). The delegation will be assisted by Ms FranÁoise KEMPF and Ms Charlotte ALTENHOENER-DION from the Secretariat of the Framework Convention.
