Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities

Consultation Seminar on the Draft Commentary on Linguistic Rights of Persons Belonging to National Minorities
21 22 February 2012

The Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities is preparing a third thematic commentary on the language rights of persons belonging to national minorities under the Framework Convention. This follows the previous thematic commentaries on Education (2006) and Participation in Public Life (2008) which have been translated into a number of languages.

As part of the drafting process for the third thematic commentary, a seminar was organised by the Advisory Committee in co-operation with the European Academy of Bolzano/Bozen in February 2012 to directly consult minority representatives and experts from a variety of countries and receive their feedback and viewpoints on the draft text. Workshops were organised to discuss in more detail themes such as language rights and identification, minority language education, and the regulation of language use in public.

The Advisory Committee plans to adopt the commentary in May 2012.
