Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters
Technical information
The Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters
has been developed as a follow up to the Council
of Europe’s White Paper on Intercultural
Dialogue “Living together as equals in dignity”
and in particular in application of Section 5.3
Learning and teaching intercultural competences
(page 25, paragraph 152):
“Complementary
tools should be developed to encourage students
to exercise independent critical faculties
including to reflect critically on their own
responses and attitudes to experiences of other
cultures.”
This site contains the two versions of the
Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters, a
standard version and a version for younger
learners, as well as various support documents.
For a comprehensive overview of all the
components, please see the Introduction.
All documents are published in pdf format and
may be downloaded, saved to your computer and
used freely. Facilitators may modify stimuli as
they think appropriate for their users, but it
is recommended that they do not change the
section headings and main questions or the order
in which these are presented so that the
theoretical integrity of the instrument is
maintained.
The Autobiography
of Intercultural Encounters is available in
French and English, the two official languages
of the Council of Europe. Translations formally
approved by the relevant authorities in the
member states may be made available on-line at
the Council of Europe’s Language Policy Division
website. For further information, please contact
