The lab will explore education approaches that place identity within a global community, transcending geographical, cultural or political borders. How can education support active citizenship in an increasingly interdependent world?

Making global citizenship education possible for refugees, United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)

UNRWA promotes global citizenship through its Human Rights Education Progamme in a very challenging context: in war torn Syria, the occupied Palestinian territory, Jordan, and Lebanon. The organization has successfully incorporated human rights concepts and practices into its teaching and learning practices for over half a million children in its nearly 700 schools. Through practical activities and discussions UNRWA students learn about human rights values, diversity and the global world, although as Palestine refugees most have never set foot outside their places of birth. UNRWA also promotes youth participation and active citizenship at different levels, from local to global through its elected student bodies, and innovative approaches which connect Palestine refugee youth with each other, and with youth from other parts of the globe.

Ozlem ESKIOCAK

Since 2012 Ms. Ozlem Eskiocak has been managing the Human Rights Education Programme at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which reaches half a million refugee children in its schools every year. She has overseen the training of 22,000 educators on integrating human rights concepts into regular academic curricula and adopting human rights friendly practices. She has been working on human rights, education, and gender issues in the Middle East for the past eight years and she was previously a youth activist. Ms. Eskiocak holds a Master’s degree in Development Management from the London School of Economics.

Ph.D. Candidate in Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina

Donovan Livingston is a Ph.D. Candidate in Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A native of Fayetteville, NC, Donovan is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Columbia University, Harvard University – where he recently earned a masters degree in Learning & Teaching. Throughout his career, Donovan has worked to increase access and equity in higher education, serving first-generation and low-income high school students in pursuit of college admission. In his journey, Donovan has used the art of spoken word poetry as a tool for reflection, healing, and highlighting injustices in education.

Elísio Macamo is originally from Mozambique, where he grew up and went to school. He holds an MA degree in Translation and Interpretation from the University of Salford (UK), an MA degree in Sociology and Social Policy from the University of North London (UK), a PhD in General Sociology and a Habilitation in General Sociology and Development Sociology from the University of Bayreuth (Germany). He is Associate Professor of African Studies, Director of the Centre for African Studies and Head of the Social Sciences Department of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Basel

Grigory Petushkov is heading the National Youth Council of Russia since 2012 – organization uniting more than 60 largest youth non-governmental organizations in Russia and working in the field of international youth cooperation, youth rights, intercultural dialogue and promoting civic education of youth. Moreover, today Mr. Petushkov is also chairing the National Preparatory Committee of the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students that will take place in Russia from 14 to 22 of October 2017. The Festival will welcome more than 20.000 young people from all over the world who will unite in one big movement for friendship, solidarity, youth rights and peace.

Milica Popovic, MA is a political scientist working as a freelance consultant, leading her own research and consulting agency “Nomade” since 2012. Milica is currently member of the Expert Group of the Council of Europe for the development of Competences for Democratic Culture and has worked on quality assurance, recognition of qualifications, and access to education and education for democracy within the European Higher Education Area, the Western Balkans, Caucasus and MENA region. Milica is currently a teaching assistant at the Paris School of International Affairs (Sciences Po Paris) and a PhD candidate at both Sciences Po Paris and University of Ljubljana.

Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Armenia to the Council of Europe

Paruyr Hovhannisyan is Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Armenia to the Council of Europe since July 2016. From 2014 to 2016, he was Director of the European Department at the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Among other positions, he also served as Advisor to the Minister on EU issues, Ministry of Economy, and as Deputy Head of the Mission of Armenia to the EU. He holds a degree in International Relations and Governance from St. John’s University, New York, and a degree in International Relations from Yerevan State University.
