Summary of the project: The children, teenagers and families of the emergency shelter for migrants of Ivry-sur-Seine, coordinated by the French association Emmaüs Solidarité, find themselves in the official procedure of an asylum application. These administrative procedures, managed by social workers of Emmaüs Solidarité, sometimes imply long waiting times and frequent sudden displacements for migrants. It is therefore vital to promote their well-being, strengthen both their skills for everyday life and their language skills to thus stimulate their interactions with the local host community in order to facilitate their future integration and social inclusion in the French society. To allow this integration and social inclusion, different issues will be addressed: all forms of discrimination and language barriers, which are the first obstacles to integration, psychological and post traumatic support, coexistence with other groups of migrants that experience similar circumstances, organisation of activities outside of the shelter and contact with the local population. Indeed, this project’s general objective is to facilitate children’s, teenagers’ and families’ integration and social inclusion in France. They claim to reach the following specific objectives:

  • Promote happiness and the well-being of migrant children and teenagers.
  • Contribute to improve the children and teenagers’ mental health.
  • Strengthen children and teenagers’ language skills.
  • Improve the frequency of their interactions with French children and teenagers and improve their level of mutual confidence.
  • Improve the coexistence between different communities inside the shelter.
  • Involve the parents and thus boost the frequency of their interactions with French people and improve their level of mutual confidence.
  • Equip the shelters professional team with necessary tools in order for the project to work in the middle and long term.

In order to carry out our actions, we will employ the work methodology required in emergency situations developed by the foundation, adapting it to the humanitarian crisis and local context. During 3 months, 3 workshops per week, for an average of 40 children and teenagers (divided in two groups depending on their age) will be put in place. This cycle of 3 months will be repeated 3 times a year. The average stay of the children and adolescents in the shelter varies between 2 weeks and 3 months and is hard to foresee, since it depends on the administrative procedures. Consequently, we will conceive a programme of 9 sessions, in order to guarantee that every child and teenager can benefit from a complete intervention. This programme will look to strengthen different resilient factors like confidence, empathy, pacific resolution to conflicts and promote children and teenagers’ happiness for the purpose of their integration and social inclusion. During the workshops, we will use a French handbook with key words linked to football and to emotions in order to favour the learning of the language. Moreover, to promote the integration and social inclusion of the children, teenagers, families and communities of the shelter, we will organise meetings twice a week with children and teenagers from sport clubs and/or participating in similar programmes in the surrounding area or Ile de France region. Parents and the shelter’s community will participate in the organisation of these meetings. At the end of this project, at least 120 migrant children and teenagers and 60 French children and teenagers will have participated in this project. In order to promote gender equality and women’s participation in the projects, the workshops and proposed meetings will be mixed. However, it is difficult to guarantee a participation rate of 50% of women since there are generally more migrant men than women.
