New report on human trafficking reveals money laundering trends and indicators

The Council of Europe has published a new report on the financial aspects of human trafficking, outlining common trends, methods, and money laundering indicators. The report is intended to support institutions and organisations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in detecting financial activities linked to trafficking, disrupting criminal networks, and strengthening victim protection.

It highlights typical ways in which criminal profits are concealed, including cash-based schemes, fictitious companies, trade-based laundering, investments in real estate and high-value assets, as well as the use of casinos, virtual currencies and informal payment systems. The report is designed as a practical tool for financial institutions, financial intelligence units and other relevant stakeholders.

The publication, titled “Financial Aspects of Human Trafficking: General Trends, Typologies and Indicators of Money Laundering,” was presented on 17 March 2026 in Sarajevo, following the first meeting of the steering committee of the project “Strengthening Anti-Trafficking Responses in Bosnia and Herzegovina through Systemic Reform, Policy Development and Comprehensive Support for Victims”.

The event was organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with the Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the BiH State Investigation and Protection Agency. The activity is implemented under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026–2029 and funded through voluntary contributions.
