The updated version of the handbook on Protecting the Right to a Fair Trial under the European Convention on Human Rights prepared by Dovydas Vitkauskas, a Council of Europe's consultant on justice reform and good governance, former lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights, is now available.

The right to a fair trial, guaranteed by Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, is fundamental to the rule of law and democracy. It is however one of the most complex right in terms of its scope and it is therefore important to assist judges, prosecutors, lawyers and human rights’ defenders at all levels in ensuring its application in line with the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. Developed as a practical tool for legal professionals, this handbook highlights key notions and principles and includes reference to the most recent case law of the Strasbourg Court.

It is produced by the Human Rights National Implementation Division of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law, Council of Europe.
