International Youth Day: “Young people must have a say, from the local to the international level”, says Thomas Andersson

"We need to recognise young people as full citizens who have valuable insights and ideas on how to plan for the future. Their participation at all levels makes our societies more inclusive and resilient," said Congress Rapporteur on Youth Thomas Andersson (Sweden, ILDG) on International Youth Day, 12 August 2021. "Young people must have a say in the policies that affect them, from the local to the international level. And as the level closest to our young people, cities and regions have a particular responsibility to encourage and facilitate this participation," the Rapporteur stressed.

“The Congress leads by example. Since 2014, the Congress invites Youth Delegates from all our member States to take part in our activities”, Andersson explained. “Our Youth Delegates have a real impact. They have helped develop the Congress’ work on youth-related issues, such as social rights of youth and youth work. Their voice and perspective have also strengthened our other thematic work.”

“That is why, on International Youth Day, I want to take the opportunity to encourage young people to engage with their local and regional councils. Keep challenging us. Keep making a difference,” Mr Andersson concluded, reiterating the Congress’ commitment to promoting the participation of young people.

Every year, International Youth Day (IYD) celebrates young peoples’ voices, actions, and initiatives, as well as their meaningful, universal and equitable engagement. (from International Youth Day | United Nations)
