Speaking the 116th session of the Venice Commission, on 19 October 2018, Leendert VERBEEK (Netherlands, R, SOC), Chair of the Congress Monitoring Committee, presented the Committee’s recent activities in the field of monitoring and election observation. He mentioned, in particular, the reports on the situation of local and regional democracy in Slovenia, Georgia and Lithuania, which have been approved by the Committee and will be adopted by the Congress members at its 35th Session (6-8 November 2018). The Chair shared his concerns about local and regional democracy in Poland and in the Republic of Moldova. The reports on which will be examined at the next meeting of the Monitoring Committee, on 6 November 2018, in Strasbourg, France.
Leendert VERBEEK also informed the Venice Commission about the recent election observation mission: in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the one hand, for the elections of 10 cantonal assemblies, on 7 October last, in the context of general elections and, in Poland, on the other hand, to assess the local elections held on 21 October, in particular those in the cities of Warsaw, Lublin, Lodz, Krakow and Wroclaw.
