Understanding the European Social Charter (ESC) and its implementation

Legal professionals in Georgia participated in a comprehensive training focused on the European Social Charter (ESC), its enforcement mechanisms, and its integration into the national labour law. The training covered key social rights, relevant case law, legal translation challenges, and occupational health and safety issues, within the context of Georgian legal framework and its compatibility with ESC standards.

Participants broadened their knowledge and skills necessary to analyse ESC provisions, conduct legal research using HUDOC and similar tools, and assess how well Georgian legislation reflects ESC standards.

Sergi Jorbenadze, a national expert in legal education, arbitration, and consultancy and an international expert, Marius Bartninkas, specialising in labour law with an in-depth knowledge of the ESC, jointly facilitated the sessions.

By combining theoretical foundations with practical case studies and legal drafting exercises, this training promoted critical thinking and enhanced the ability to apply ESC principles effectively in legal and policy frameworks.

As a result of this training, about 40 legal professionals in Georgia are now better equipped to protect social rights of citizens more effectively by applying their enhanced understanding of the ESC and related case law.

The training sessions were organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Further Enhancement of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia.” The Project is implemented as part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2024-2027.
