On 5–7 November, the winning team of the 2025 Moot Court on the European Social Charter (ESC) took part in a study visit to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, gaining practical exposure to social and economic rights and the functioning of the Charter’s monitoring mechanisms.
During the three-day visit, students observed deliberations of the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) and attended thematic sessions with the Department of Social Rights on the rights to health, social protection, labour and trade union rights, and the rights of persons with disabilities. These sessions strengthened their understanding of the ESC’s reporting and collective complaints procedures and illustrated how social standards are applied across Europe.
The visit also included meetings at the European Parliament, participation in the 2025 World Forum for Democracy, and an exchange with a Georgian lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights. These engagements broadened the students’ awareness of European human rights institutions and current governance issues.
The study visit equipped students with concrete knowledge, hands-on experience of the Charter system, and professional contacts that will support them in their future contribution to advancing social rights in Georgia.
As one student noted, seeing the work of European institutions in practice strengthen their motivation to promote these standards nationally and to disseminate it within their peers.
The event was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Further Enhancement of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia.” The Project is implemented as part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2024-2027.
