This 60-hour online course, organised in spring 2027 by the University of Pavia in collaboration with the University of Milan, is designed to explore the interplay between the protection of fundamental rights in Europe, including in light of the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and national criminal law.
The course explores the integration of the Italian criminal justice system with supranational legal sources in Europe. Its aim is to provide participants with the theoretical and practical tools needed to navigate the complex, multi-level system for the protection of fundamental rights. Through practical and workshop-based sessions, participants will develop their familiarity with procedural remedies and legal arguments that enable European legal sources to be invoked in criminal proceedings. Particular attention is paid to key supranational protection mechanisms, from preliminary references to the Court of Justice of the European Union to individual applications before the European Court of Human Rights.
The programme, including 15 online sessions scheduled on Tuesday afternoons from March to June 2027, comprises three modules : (1) European criminal law, fundamental rights protection and the role of national courts (24 hours), (2) European criminal law, fundamental rights protection and the role of European courts (24 hours) and (3) Judicial cooperation in criminal matters and professional ethics for lawyers (12 hours).
Further information and practical details can be found on this poster (in Italian).
The deadline for applications is 15 February 2027.
