Strengthening human rights protection in Serbia

The main objective of the project is to facilitate and contribute to the protection of human rights in Serbia by and before domestic judicial authorities in line with European human rights standards.
Main partners and beneficiaries: Constitutional Court of Serbia, Ministry of Justice, Law Faculties, Serbian Judicial Academy, Republic Prosecutor's Offices, Supreme Court of Cassation, Serbian Government Agent's Office before the European Court of Human Rights, National Assembly of Serbia, judges, prosecutors, judicial staff in courts and prosecution offices, students of law, civil society representatives.
1. Mechanism for the execution of the ECtHR judgments is strengthened as prerequisite for effective implementation of ECHR standards in Serbia
2. Representatives of judiciary increased knowledge to apply the ECHR and standards arising from the ECtHR case-law in a coherent manner
3. Future legal professionals are equipped with the relevant knowledge related to European human rights
Key Activities
- Support to identifying/implementing of measures/execution of the ECtHR judgements with respect to Serbia
- Capacity-building activities for the Government Agent before the ECtHR and awareness-raising activities related to strengthening of domestic capacity for rapid execution of the ECtHR judgments
- Assessment of legislations with recommendations of legal proposals amending the Serbian legal framework on the execution of ECtHR judgments and supporting authorities to addressing those recommendations
- Placements of the representatives of the highest domestic courts to the ECtHR Registry
- Placements of the representatives of the Government Agent office before the ECtHR/other public bodies to the Department for the Execution of the ECtHR Judgments
- Enhancing a software/IT tool for the case-law database of the Constitutional Court
- Extracurricular activities for law students on the ECHR/ECtHR standards (legal clinics, summers schools, ect.)
- Various capacity-building activities/training sessions for the representatives of judiciary and prosecutors
- Review of curriculums at selected law faculties with a view of including HR standards in an adequate manner
- Internships at partners institutions for law students
