16 staff members from the Ombudsman of Cyprus participated in a hands-on training on the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) in Nicosia. The training focused on NPM roles, report writing, and practical oversight of detention and social care settings. Interactive sessions included group exercises, role plays in detention environments, and discussions on NPM report effectiveness and monitoring recommendations’ follow-up. A key takeaway was the clearer distinction between the Ombudsman’s traditional mandate and NPM responsibilities.

The training contributed to enhancing participants’ skills in interviewing, reporting, and NPM activities, and highlighted an ongoing need for clarity on the NPM’s role in social care and the legal definition of detention.
Under the project, "Technical support for more effective and resilient National Preventive Mechanisms," co-funded by the European Union through the Technical Support Instrument and implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the European Commission, follow-up sessions will ensure continued development of NPM staff.
