Argentina ratifies Convention 108+ during the Privacy Symposium

Today, 17 April 2023, in Venice, on the occasion of the special event of the Privacy Symposium 2023 dedicated to Convention 108+ and in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General, Ms Beatriz de Anchorena, Director of the National Agency for Access to Public Information of Argentina, deposited the instruments of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS 223).

Argentina has been Party to Convention 108 since 2019 and becomes the 23rd state to ratify the modernised Convention 108 (Convention 108+). It is also the 3rd state non member of the Council of Europe to join the club and the 2nd state from the American Continent to do so. This ratification emphasizes the ever strong interest of that part of the world for the works of the Committee of Convention 108 and for this unique and universal convention, which aims at ensuring appropriate protection that an individual would seek to have in an ever-expanding digital era, in order to safeguard dignity and an intimate private sphere, and to fully enjoy the right to informational self-determination. In that respect, one should recall that last year the OEA joined the organisations participating to the Committee’s work.

This ratification during a major international privacy event gives a strong signal to other states to ratify Convention 108+ that still needs 15 ratifications to enter into force.
