Under its Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, Iceland ratifies Convention 108+

Today, 20 January 2023, in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General,  Ambassador Ragnhildur ARNLJÓTSDÓTTIR, Permanent Representative of Iceland to the Council of Europe, deposited the instruments of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS 223).

Iceland has been Party to Convention 108 since 1 July 1991; it became today the 21st state to ratify the modernised Convention 108 (Convention 108+).

Convention 108+ is 17 ratifications away of its entry into force. The ratification of this essential instrument by the state currently chairing the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe is a strong signal to encourage other states to follow suit and enable the entry into force of this landmark instrument aiming at ensuring appropriate protection that an individual would seek to have in an ever-expanding digital era, in order to safeguard dignity and an intimate private sphere, and to fully enjoy the right to informational self-determination.
