The Council of Europe launches new project to promote social and economic rights in Georgia

On 23 September 2021 the Council of Europe Office in Georgia will launch the new Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia” through an online event. 

The event will be opened by Cristophe Poirel, Human Rights Director, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI), Council of Europe; Ekaterine Tikaradze, Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs and Natalia Voutova, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia.

The Project aims at promoting social rights in Georgia in line with the provisions of the European Social Charter. In this regard, the Project will assess the current key issues in the area of social rights in the country, define and agree with the authorities on the scope for further co-operation in addressing the main challenges related to social rights. It will assist the Georgian authorities in consolidating their capacities for protecting social rights and delivering social services in line with the requirements of the European Social Charter and relevant European standards. The Project is funded through voluntary contributions within the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.The total budget of the Project is 350.500 Euros.

The key partners of the Project are the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs; the LEPL Labour Inspection Office; the Public Defender of Georgia; the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia; the Ministry of Justice; the Healthcare and Social Issues Committee of Parliament of Georgia; the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of Parliament of Georgia as well as relevant civil society and non-governmental organisations.

The event will be streamed live on the Facebook page of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia on 23rd September at 11:00am.
