In the Office we are a team of 42 people, working on a variety of cooperation projects that support Georgia in upholding and promoting the Council of Europe standards of democracy, human rights and rule of law.

The Council of Europe is the continent’s leading human rights organisation, with 46 member states, including all 27 EU countries. All our member states are party to the European Convention on Human Rights, which is the cornerstone of human rights protection in Europe.

Georgia became the 41st member state of the Council of Europe in 1999, an historic step best remembered when the Prime Minister at the time, Mr Zurab Zhvania, at the Parliamentary Assembly, declared on behalf of the Georgian people: “I am Georgian and therefore I am European”.

"We cannot meet today’s challenges with yesterday’s playbook. And we must never forget that democracy is our first line of defence. What Europe needs is a reset: a New Democratic Pact for Europe." Alain Berset Secretary General of the Council of Europe

The Council of Europe Office in Georgia promotes democratic values which are at the core of the New Democratic Pact for Europe.
