Judges, public prosecutors and police officers from North Macedonia attended the Cascade training on protection and safety of journalists, organised by the Academy for Judges and Public Prosecutors of North Macedonia with the support of the joint EU and Council of Europe action of Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media in North Macedonia (JUFREX). This cascade training was focused specifically on the topic of protection and safety of journalists.
Following the JUFREX methodology for training of trainers, the international expert from the Council of Europe provided key insights on the topic of protection and safety of journalists. The presentation aimed to help participants understand risks to journalists and to encourage discussion on challenges on protection of journalists in North Macedonia. Participants were also introduced to relevant Council of Europe and European Commission Recommendations on protection and safety of journalists and other media actors, as well as the HELP online course of the same topic.
The local expert on the other hand elaborated and presented on the local legislation and developments on protection and safety of journalists, and in addition to the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights presented by the international expert, he presented on the domestic case-law.
Participants were actively engaged in this interactive cascade training and with their group work on the case studies and the exchanges during the discussion they were able to better understand the role of the journalists in a democratic society and how each of them shall perform their duties when dealing with cases concerning journalists.
This event is organised under the Grant Agreement with the Academy for judges and public prosecutors of North Macedonia within the action on “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in North Macedonia (JUFREX 2)” . This action is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey II”, that enables the Beneficiaries to meet their reform agendas in the fields of human rights, rule of law and democracy and to comply with the European standards, including where relevant within the framework of the EU enlargement process.
